H-B Woodlawn Secondary Program is a countywide Arlington Public Schools (APS) option program for grades 6 to 12. It has no attendance zone: students enter by lottery. Its central focus is student choice, in three areas: use of time and personal behavior, educational goals and school governance, according to the program’s overview. The program grew from a proposal by Arlington students and teachers that the School Board approved in 1971.

Enrollment and teachers
- APS count: 671 students on Sept. 30, 2026, in APS’s official membership summary (PDF): 78 sixth graders, 82 in seventh, 87 in eighth, 114 in ninth, 97 in 10th, 104 in 11th and 109 in 12th.
- Federal count: the NCES directory lists the program with 50 full-time-equivalent teachers in 2023-24 but reports no enrollment for it, so no student-teacher ratio can be worked out from that row.
State report card
Virginia publishes no separate School Quality Profile or framework rating for H-B Woodlawn; the state’s list of Arlington schools does not include it. APS’s 2026-27 division summary (PDF) rates 35 schools and does not list H-B Woodlawn either. The profiles that are published for Arlington’s middle and high schools are linked from our public schools hub.
Admission
H-B Woodlawn admission is by lottery, run by the APS central office. For the 2027-28 school year, according to the option schools page:
- Monday, Nov. 9, 2026: lottery applications open on SchoolMint
- Friday, Jan. 22, 2027, at 4 p.m.: applications close
- Friday, Feb. 12, 2027: live lottery, with Feb. 19 as the snow date
- Friday, Feb. 26, 2027, at 8 p.m.: deadline to accept a first-round seat
Sixth-grade seats are shared out by the size of each elementary school’s fifth-grade class, including option schools, plus applicants new to APS. The last sixth-grade class had 75 seats. Ninth-grade seats work the same way from eighth-grade cohorts; 26 ninth-grade seats were open to applicants in 2024-25, according to APS’s schools and programs page, which links the slot and lottery data. There is no paper application.
Attendance zone
H-B Woodlawn has no neighborhood zone. Every Arlington address is still assigned a neighborhood middle and high school, which a student keeps if not offered a seat. Check yours in the APS boundary locator.
