Electricity in Arlington comes from Dominion Energy, not the county. When the power goes out
- Check the map first. Dominion says its outage map gives near real-time updates on affected areas, restoration efforts and estimated restoration times. If your area already shows an outage, Dominion knows about it.
- Report it if it is not there, online, in the app or at 866-366-4357.
- Track it with Dominion’s online outage status tool, and read its outage restoration FAQs to see how crews decide which repairs come first.
Downed power lines
Dominion’s advice is blunt: stay away and do not touch. Stay at least 30 feet from a downed line, and anything it is touching, such as a fence, a puddle or a car, and call 866-366-4357 to report the location. If a line is sparking, burning or has hurt someone, call 911 first.
Planned outages
Dominion sometimes shuts power off on purpose to do work on its lines. Its planned outages page explains what to expect.
Storms
Before a storm:

Forecasts and warnings for Arlington come from the National Weather Service office in Sterling, Virginia, at weather.gov/lwx.
Natural gas
Washington Gas delivers natural gas in Northern Virginia. Its instructions for a suspected leak: leave the building or location immediately, then call 911 and the Washington Gas emergency line, 844-927-4427 (844-WASHGAS), option 1.
The Dominion-NextEra merger
On July 15, 2026, NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy asked Virginia’s State Corporation Commission to approve a merger that the county describes as a $67 billion acquisition. Arlington County and the City of Alexandria agreed on Sept. 22 to intervene jointly in the case, with County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti saying the two would push for “just and reasonable rates, reliable service” and clean energy. The commission is taking public comments: Nov. 2 is the last day to sign up as a public witness, testimony is scheduled for Nov. 5, 9 and 10, and Nov. 9 is the last day for written comments.
